Veteran Actor and Scholar Professor Kola Oyewo Dies at 80
Nigeria’s entertainment industry and academic community are mourning the passing of renowned actor, dramatist, and educator Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, popularly known as Professor Kola Oyewo.
He died at the age of 80.
The announcement was made on Friday by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, in a heartfelt Facebook post, where he reflected on his father’s remarkable life and enduring legacy.
Expressing his grief, Adetoyese described the late professor as a man remembered for his compassion, wisdom, resilience, and generosity.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved father,” he wrote.
He noted that while the family is deeply saddened by the loss, they remain thankful for the meaningful life Professor Oyewo lived and the positive impact he had on countless people over the years.
According to him, the actor’s influence will continue to live on through the memories, lessons, and inspiration he left behind for relatives, friends, students, colleagues, and admirers.
Adetoyese also requested prayers and support for the family during this difficult period, describing his father’s life as one devoted to education, culture, and the performing arts.
Professor Oyewo was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected figures in theatre and performing arts. Throughout a distinguished career spanning several decades, he built a reputation as both a gifted actor and an accomplished academic.
He played a vital role in preserving and advancing Yoruba theatre, while also contributing significantly to the promotion of Nigerian culture through stage productions, film appearances, and scholarly work.
His contributions extended beyond acting, encompassing teaching, mentorship, and cultural advocacy, making him an influential figure in the development of theatre arts in Nigeria.
