The Hidden Dangers of Habitual Incense Use
Dr. Jamila Aliyu Dikko, a prominent medical professional and health advocate, has raised an urgent alarm regarding the frequent use of incense. She classifies the practice as “very dangerous,” pointing out that the combustion process releases a cocktail of hazardous chemicals that pose a significant threat to respiratory health.
The core of the issue lies in the composition of modern incense sticks, which are often saturated with synthetic fragrances. These products frequently contain toxic additives such as phthalates and parabens. Dr. Dikko warns that inhaling the resulting smoke causes cumulative damage to lung tissue. She draws a direct parallel between this habit and cigarette smoking, suggesting that because many users inhale high concentrations of the smoke directly, the long-term impact on the body can be just as severe—if not worse.
According to Dr. Dikko, the respiratory system is not designed to process smoke of any kind, regardless of how pleasant the aroma may be. Consistent exposure inevitably leads to cellular damage. To illustrate this, she cited several cases of women in Northern Nigeria who developed lung cancer despite having no history of tobacco use. In one specific instance, a patient’s condition was so severe that doctors were convinced she was a smoker, only to learn that her illness stemmed from “bathing” herself in concentrated incense smoke multiple times a day.
Beyond general lung irritation, the smoke contains benzene, a scientifically recognized carcinogen. This specific chemical significantly elevates the risk of developing life-threatening malignancies over time, making habitual exposure a silent but potent health crisis.
For those who still wish to use incense, Dr. Dikko suggests a strict safety protocol: burn the incense only in an unoccupied room and ensure the area is completely ventilated before anyone re-enters. However, for a truly health-conscious alternative, she recommends switching to essential oil diffusers, which provide fragrance without the toxic byproduct of combustion.
