US Condemns Killing of Pastor’s Family Members in Plateau State

The United States has strongly condemned the killing of nine members of the extended family of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo in Plateau State, Nigeria.

The attack reportedly occurred on July 12 in Kum community, Riyom Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of several relatives, including a two-month-old baby. According to reports, the attackers allegedly asked specifically for the pastor before opening fire.

In a statement shared on X, the US State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs described the incident as “horrific” and expressed concern over continued violence affecting Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The bureau offered condolences to the victims’ families and called on Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice while taking urgent measures to prevent further attacks.

Rev. Dachomo, a regional leader of the Church of Christ in Nations, has reportedly faced repeated threats over his activism against what he describes as genocide in the region. His grandmother and uncle were previously killed in similar attacks, and the same militia group allegedly warned that he could be targeted next.

Plateau State has continued to experience recurring violence linked to farmer-herder conflicts and attacks by armed groups.

The United States reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigeria to combat terrorism and violent extremism, stressing the importance of protecting Christians and other vulnerable communities and ensuring that people can practice their faith without fear.
