Bandits Demand ₦40 Million Levy From Kebbi Farmers
Armed bandits have reportedly demanded ₦40 million from farmers in several communities in Bena, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as a condition for allowing them to access their farmlands ahead of this year’s farming season.
The claim was made by security analyst and conflict journalist Bakastine, who raised concerns about the situation in a post on X.
According to reports from affected communities, the demand has triggered fear among residents, with some families reportedly leaving their villages over concerns about possible attacks. Others remain uncertain about returning to their farms.
Locals said the development has increased anxiety in an area already facing persistent security challenges and a limited security presence.
Observers noted that the incident reflects a broader trend in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups are accused of imposing levies on rural communities before farming activities can begin. These payments are often described locally as “taxes” or “peace agreements.”
However, reports indicate that such arrangements have not provided lasting security and have instead contributed to continued intimidation and dependence on armed groups.
Security experts have warned that paying such levies could strengthen the influence of criminal groups, undermine state authority, and pose a threat to agricultural production and food security.
Questioning the situation, Bakastine wrote: “If farmers must pay bandits before cultivating their land, who truly controls these communities?”
As of the time of reporting, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the alleged demands.
