Larin Rescues Canada as Hosts Earn 1-1 Draw Against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Substitute Cyle Larin came to Canada’s rescue with a late equaliser as the World Cup co-hosts battled back to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B match.

For much of Friday’s encounter, Bosnia appeared on course for a memorable victory after taking the lead through Jovo Lukic, whose first international goal put his country ahead in their first World Cup appearance in 12 years.

The visitors struck in the 21st minute when Lukic reacted quickest to a flicked corner delivery and guided the ball into the net.

Canada responded with sustained attacking pressure and nearly found an equaliser early in the second half. Richie Laryea looked certain to score in the 53rd minute, but Bosnia defender Sead Kolasinac produced a remarkable goal-line intervention, diverting the effort onto the crossbar and away from danger.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Canada struggled to convert their chances as Bosnia defended resolutely and looked set to hold on for all three points.

The turning point came in the 76th minute when coach Jesse Marsch introduced Larin from the bench.

Just moments after entering the match, the striker made his presence felt. In the 78th minute, he controlled the ball inside the penalty area, turned sharply, and fired a shot that took a slight deflection before finding the back of the net, sparking celebrations among the home supporters.

Canada had earlier threatened through Jonathan David, who squandered a golden opportunity when he struck directly at goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj from close range.

Bosnia also came close to extending their advantage after the break when Ermedin Demirovic broke through on goal, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, making his World Cup debut, produced an important save to keep his side in the contest.

Larin’s goal ultimately ensured Canada avoided defeat and earned the nation its first-ever World Cup point. While the hosts will be pleased with their comeback, they may also feel disappointed not to have turned their dominance into a winning start to the tournament.
