Qatar Snatch Dramatic Late Draw Against Switzerland 1–1

Qatar rescued a dramatic point against Switzerland after Boualem Khoukhi headed home a stoppage-time equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw in their Group B FIFA World Cup encounter on Saturday.

The late goal sparked wild celebrations among the Qatari players, many of whom collapsed to the turf in excitement before embracing teammates after denying Switzerland a victory that had appeared certain for most of the match.

Switzerland had taken the lead through Breel Embolo, who converted a penalty in the first half just days after resolving visa issues that initially delayed his entry into the United States for the tournament. Despite controlling possession and creating numerous opportunities, the Swiss were unable to extend their advantage.

The penalty was awarded in the 13th minute after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Embolo inside the area. Abunada received a yellow card and required medical attention after remaining motionless on the ground for several moments before eventually recovering. Embolo confidently dispatched the spot-kick into the top-left corner four minutes later, sending Swiss supporters into celebration.

The goal marked a significant moment for Embolo, whose World Cup participation had been uncertain after he was initially denied boarding a flight because of a criminal conviction that was only finalized earlier this year. An emergency visa application eventually cleared the way for him to join the Swiss squad.

Switzerland dominated possession throughout the match on a warm afternoon at Levi’s Stadium, with cooling sprinklers even activated during a first-half break. However, their inability to convert additional chances proved costly.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made several important saves for Switzerland, including an early stop from Edmilson Junior and a late intervention to deny Ahmed Alaaeldin as Qatar searched for an equaliser.

The Swiss entered the tournament hoping to improve on their Round of 16 appearance at the previous World Cup. Under coach Murat Yakin, they qualified unbeaten and secured a sixth consecutive World Cup berth, though they have never progressed beyond the quarterfinal stage.

Qatar, meanwhile, reached the tournament through the playoff route after victories over the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The 2022 hosts were eager to avoid another disappointing World Cup campaign after losing all three group-stage matches on home soil four years ago.

Their persistence was rewarded in the fourth minute of added time when Khoukhi rose highest to head home the equaliser, ensuring Qatar left with a valuable point while Switzerland were left to rue missed opportunities.
