A statue of Jesus Christ in a village in southern Lebanon has been restored after it was damaged in an incident involving Israeli soldiers earlier this week.

Italian peacekeeping forces carried out the replacement on Friday, stepping in to restore the religious monument after images circulated showing a soldier apparently striking the figure.

In response to the incident, Israeli authorities issued an apology and confirmed that two soldiers have been detained. An additional six personnel are being questioned over their involvement in the damage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the act, describing it as “wholly inconsistent with the values expected” of the country’s military.
