Ben-Gvir Defends Flotilla Video After Backlash Over Activists’ Treatment
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has defended his position following international criticism over footage showing Gaza flotilla activists being handled by Israeli forces.
A video shared by Ben-Gvir’s office showed him waving an Israeli flag while supporters reacted in the background. The footage also appeared to show tense scenes involving activists, including a woman being restrained by security personnel.
The video sparked criticism from some governments and observers, particularly over reports surrounding the detention of activists during an incident in international waters.
Responding to the backlash, Ben-Gvir accused critics within Israel’s government of being too soft toward individuals he described as supporters of terrorism.
“There are those in the government who still haven’t figured out how to behave toward supporters of terrorism,” Ben-Gvir wrote on X. “Israel has stopped being a pushover.”
He added: “Anyone who comes to our territory to support terrorism and identify with Hamas will get slapped, and we won’t turn the other cheek.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reportedly distanced himself from Ben-Gvir’s comments and the controversy surrounding the footage, saying: “You are not the face of Israel.”
The incident has added to ongoing debate within Israel over security policies, international image, and responses to pro-Palestinian activism.
