FIFA Reverses Balogun’s Red Card After Trump Intervention

FIFA has ignited widespread debate after overturning the automatic suspension imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun, making him eligible for Monday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium, despite receiving a red card in the previous round.

Balogun was dismissed during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. Under FIFA rules, a straight red card normally results in an automatic one-match suspension.

However, FIFA later announced that the suspension had been lifted, allowing the Monaco striker to feature against Belgium. The governing body cited Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which permits its judicial bodies to suspend the enforcement of disciplinary sanctions under certain circumstances.

The decision came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly disclosed that he had contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging the organization to review Balogun’s red card.

Belgium and UEFA Condemn the Decision

The reversal triggered strong reactions from the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA), UEFA, former FIFA president Sepp Blatter, coaches, former players, and football commentators, many of whom argued that political involvement in disciplinary matters undermines the credibility of the tournament.

The Belgian federation described FIFA’s action as “astonishing” and said it was examining every available legal avenue to defend the principles of fairness and sporting integrity.

UEFA also criticized the ruling, calling it “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable,” while warning that it could damage confidence in football’s disciplinary system.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter questioned the process, saying disciplinary decisions should be based on established rules, evidence, and independent review—not political intervention.

Trump Confirms He Contacted FIFA

President Trump later confirmed that he personally asked Infantino to review the incident after watching the match.

According to Trump, Balogun’s challenge was an accidental collision rather than a foul deserving of a red card. He later praised FIFA on social media, thanking the organization for what he described as correcting an unfair decision.

Infantino acknowledged receiving the call but insisted that FIFA’s independent disciplinary bodies handled the review and that he played no role in influencing their final decision.

Questions Raised Over FIFA’s Regulations

The controversy has also focused attention on FIFA’s own disciplinary rules.

The Belgian federation argues that FIFA’s decision conflicts with regulations stating that any player shown a direct red card must automatically miss the following match. The RBFA also claimed FIFA failed to provide a satisfactory legal explanation for overturning the suspension and made it difficult for Belgium to formally challenge the decision.

In addition, the federation alleged that FIFA omitted its usual presentation on automatic suspensions during the pre-match coordination meeting before Belgium’s encounter with the United States.

Balogun Cleared to Face Belgium

Balogun, who plays club football for AS Monaco, has scored three goals for the United States at the tournament, making him the team’s leading scorer.

His availability provides a significant boost for the American side ahead of the knockout fixture against Belgium. However, FIFA’s decision to overturn his red card suspension has become one of the most controversial moments of the 2026 World Cup, with debate continuing over the independence of football’s disciplinary process and the potential impact of political influence on sporting decisions.
