Cleric Criticizes Abuja Airport Chapel Project, Demands Equal Provision for Mosque

Islamic scholar Alaramma Ismail Maiduguri has sparked debate after criticizing the planned construction of an ecumenical chapel and pilgrimage centre at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, describing it as unfair to Muslims.

In a viral video reacting to the project’s groundbreaking, he referenced reports that senior government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, were present at the ceremony, while land was provided by the FCT administration.

The cleric argued that the development reflects unequal treatment and called for similar provisions for Muslims. He urged relevant Islamic organizations to respond and advocate for the construction of a mosque at the airport, stressing the need for balance.

He also raised broader concerns about fairness in governance, questioning whether different communities are being treated equally in matters of infrastructure and support.

While acknowledging that all religious groups deserve fair treatment, he emphasized that equity should involve equal opportunities and facilities for both Christians and Muslims.

The remarks have since generated mixed reactions, with some supporting the call for inclusivity and others urging calm and dialogue over sensitive religious issues.
