“He Walked Away When I Was Five” — Woman Sparks Online Reactions After Declining Kidney Test for Estranged Father

A Nigerian woman has triggered intense discussion across social media after sharing her response to a request involving a kidney transplant for her long-absent father.

Identified on X (formerly Twitter) as @thekingdaughtta, she explained that her father left her and her mother when she was only five years old to begin a new family, completely cutting off contact afterward.

In a now-viral post, she described growing up with deep feelings of abandonment, learning to survive independently, and eventually creating a life for herself without any support or presence from him.

She revealed that she was recently reached out to by her father’s wife, who informed her that he is critically ill and in need of a kidney transplant. According to the message, she was suggested as a potential compatible donor and was urged to undergo testing.

The woman further stated that after other family members were found unsuitable as donors, pressure was placed on her. She said she has received multiple messages accusing her of being heartless and selfish for refusing to help.

She also disclosed that her mother encouraged her to reflect carefully on her decision, warning that she might struggle with guilt if her father dies. Despite this, the woman insisted she feels no remorse about her choice.

Her Tweet Summary:

She explained that her father abandoned her and her mother at a young age, offered no emotional or financial support, and was largely absent throughout her upbringing. Over time, she dealt with the emotional damage and moved forward with her life.

Years later, his wife contacted her, explaining that he urgently needs a kidney transplant and pleading with her to get tested, as she might be the most suitable match.

After learning that his relatives were not compatible, she refused, stating she owes him nothing and does not feel obligated to risk major surgery for someone who has effectively been a stranger to her.

Since then, members of his family have criticized her heavily, accusing her of acting out of bitterness and urging her to “be the bigger person.”

Although her mother suggested she consider it to avoid future guilt, she said she feels none, believing her father is facing the consequences of his past actions. Still, she admitted she occasionally wonders if her stance is too severe.

She concluded by questioning whether being asked at 28 to donate a kidney to an absent parent is reasonable — and asked the public if she should reconsider.
