Morocco Beat Netherlands on Penalties to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16
Morocco secured a dramatic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as Morocco’s hero by saving Crysencio Summerville’s penalty, the Netherlands’ fourth attempt in the shootout. Ismael Saibari then converted the decisive spot kick to send the Atlas Lions into the next round.
The victory sets up a Round of 16 clash between Morocco and Canada in Houston on Saturday.

The Netherlands looked set for victory after Cody Gakpo gave his side the lead midway through the second half. The Liverpool forward, who recently suffered the personal tragedy of losing his unborn child, celebrated emotionally with teammates after finding the back of the net.
Morocco refused to give up and found a dramatic equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time when Issa Diop rose unmarked to head home a cross from substitute Chemsdine Talbi, forcing the match into extra time.
The Atlas Lions had created several dangerous chances throughout the contest. Neil El Aynaoui nearly opened the scoring in the first half, but Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced an excellent reflex save before later denying a powerful effort from Achraf Hakimi.
The match was fiercely contested, with both teams committing to physical challenges that kept Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio busy throughout the encounter. Despite the Netherlands enjoying more possession, Morocco consistently threatened on the counterattack.
In extra time, Morocco came close to scoring the winner when Soufiane Rahimi broke through on goal, only for Verbruggen to make another outstanding save to keep the Dutch alive.
The match ultimately went to penalties, where Morocco recovered from an early miss by El Aynaoui to claim a memorable 3-2 shootout victory, with Bounou’s crucial save and Saibari’s winning penalty sealing the historic triumph.
