Republican Congressman Seeks New Probe Into Israel’s USS Liberty Attack

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has called for a fresh investigation into Israel’s 1967 attack on the USS Liberty, saying the incident deserves renewed scrutiny nearly six decades later.

The attack occurred on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War, when Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats struck the American naval vessel in international waters near Egypt. The assault killed 34 US service members and injured more than 170 others.

Speaking on the anniversary of the incident, Massie said the USS Liberty was an unarmed ship flying a clearly visible American flag when it came under attack. He also referenced eyewitness accounts alleging that Israeli forces fired on lifeboats and crew members during the incident.

Israel has consistently maintained that the attack was a tragic case of mistaken identity. However, Massie argued that some former US intelligence officials questioned that explanation and that unresolved concerns remain.

The congressman said a new investigation would help provide answers for survivors and the families of those who were killed.

Massie has also been a vocal critic of US foreign policy in the Middle East, including Washington’s relationship with Israel and recent military involvement in the region. His comments have renewed attention on one of the most controversial episodes in US-Israel relations.
