Stealth Aviation Pioneer Denys Overholser Dies at 86

Denys Overholser, the engineer credited with transforming modern military aircraft design, has died at the age of 86.

He worked at Lockheed’s highly secretive Skunk Works division, renowned for developing advanced aviation technologies. Overholser is widely recognized for his role in shaping the concepts behind the F-117 Nighthawk, the world’s first operational stealth aircraft.

At a time when many experts believed radar evasion was impossible, he introduced a design approach using flat, angular surfaces to deflect radar waves away from their source. This innovation significantly reduced an aircraft’s radar visibility, sometimes making it appear as small as a bird.

His work laid the groundwork for future stealth platforms, influencing aircraft such as the F-22 and F-35.

Although much of his research remained classified for years, Overholser is now regarded as a key figure in aviation history. Colleagues described him as a brilliant engineer who solved one of the most difficult challenges in flight technology.

Outside his professional achievements, he was also an accomplished athlete and a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

His contributions have had a lasting impact on military aviation, with his legacy reflected in modern stealth aircraft still in operation today.
