2027: Pressure Mounts on Atiku as Obi–Kwankwaso Alliance Gains Ground

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is facing growing calls to reconsider his 2027 presidential ambition as political alignments shift within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The pressure follows a reported alliance between supporters of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose Obidient and Kwankwassiyya movements are working together ahead of the party’s primary election. While Atiku’s camp, led by Dele Momodu, is pushing for an Atiku/Obi ticket, other stakeholders are backing a joint Obi–Kwankwaso candidacy.

Opinions within the party remain divided. Some believe Obi is the strongest contender capable of securing nationwide support, while others argue that Atiku’s experience and influence in the North give him an edge. Reports also suggest former President Olusegun Obasanjo is supporting efforts to unify the opposition and favors an Obi–Kwankwaso ticket.

Several party figures have openly urged Atiku to step aside for a younger candidate. Senator Victor Umeh and media analyst Jimi Disu both suggested that doing so could strengthen the party’s chances against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Despite the pressure, Atiku has maintained confidence in his electoral strength, particularly in the North, while also pledging to support any candidate who emerges through a fair process. He stated he would step down if a consensus candidate is chosen democratically.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Obi–Kwankwaso (OK) Movement says it is working to secure the party’s ticket, with indications that Kwankwaso may accept a vice-presidential role under Obi.

The contest has, however, deepened divisions among supporters, with heated exchanges emerging online. Some Atiku loyalists have warned of protests if he steps down, while Obi–Kwankwaso supporters insist their alliance offers the best chance of victory.

Party leaders have called for restraint, warning that internal conflicts could weaken the ADC’s position ahead of the 2027 general election.
