Tragedy in Maiduguri: Aspiring Doctor’s Life Cut Short by Stray Bullet

Just a few days ago, fourteen-year-old Fatima Jibril Kali celebrated her birthday, a milestone marked by joy and high aspirations. The SS1 student, inspired by her father’s career in medicine, spoke openly about her desire to follow in his footsteps and become a doctor. However, those bright dreams were extinguished in a horrific moment of domestic normalcy within the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) staff quarters.

The tragedy unfolded while Fatima was performing a simple chore—washing dishes—when she suddenly collapsed. Her mother’s desperate cries for help brought her father, a physician at the hospital, rushing to her side. He transported her to the same emergency ward where he saves lives daily, only to receive the devastating news from his colleagues: a stray bullet had struck Fatima in the head.

Investigation into the incident revealed that the fatal shot was fired during a nearby wedding celebration by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). Despite the immediate medical intervention, Fatima passed away within minutes. Her uncle, Mohammed Jibril, expressed the family’s profound grief but noted that Governor Babagana Umara Zulum visited personally to offer condolences and vow that those responsible would be held accountable.

This senseless loss has sparked a wave of outrage regarding the dangerous practice of discharging firearms during social events. The Borno State Children’s Parliament has joined the call for justice, with President Fatima Chiroma Zanna emphasizing that using live ammunition in residential areas is a grave threat to public safety. She stressed that such recklessness puts innocent children at extreme risk.

In response, the Borno State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of five CJTF members in connection with the shooting. Law enforcement officials reiterated that firing weapons at social gatherings is strictly prohibited.
