Peter Obi Sues Kenneth Okonkwo for ₦8 Billion Over Alleged Defamation

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has filed an ₦8 billion defamation lawsuit against actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo at the High Court of Anambra State, Onitsha Judicial Division.

According to court documents dated June 25, 2026, Obi is seeking damages over statements allegedly made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on June 8, 2026, which were later shared on social media.

The lawsuit is being handled on Obi’s behalf by Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) of Alex Ejesieme, SAN & Co. (Madiba Chambers), based in Awka, Anambra State.

The case follows a public fallout between the two former political allies, who have recently exchanged criticisms over political developments and leadership within the opposition movement.

The writ of summons, which was approved for service outside Anambra State in neighboring Enugu State, gives Okonkwo 42 days from the date of service to enter an appearance in court or risk judgment being entered in his absence.

In the suit, Obi argues that the remarks made during the television interview, which were subsequently uploaded to Channels Television’s YouTube channel and shared through Okonkwo’s verified social media accounts, were false, malicious, and defamatory.

He is seeking ₦5 billion in general damages for the alleged harm to his reputation, character, integrity, public image, political standing, and goodwill. Obi is also requesting ₦2 billion in aggravated damages, alleging that the statements continued to be repeated even after his lawyers issued a demand letter on June 9, 2026.

Additionally, Obi is asking the court to award ₦1 billion in exemplary damages, claiming the defendant deliberately continued publishing the disputed allegations despite being notified of his objections.

Beyond financial compensation, Obi is requesting court orders directing Okonkwo to issue a full retraction and public apology on Channels Television, its YouTube platform, his social media accounts, and in three national newspapers. He is also seeking the removal of the disputed publications, a perpetual injunction preventing similar statements in the future, post-judgment interest on any monetary award, and the costs of the legal proceedings.
