Kano Cleric Opposes Obi–Kwankwaso Alliance, Urges Muslims to Reject It

Prominent cleric Sheikh Barrister Ishaq Adam Kano has rejected the reported political alignment between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso under the NDC, warning northern Muslims against supporting a non-Muslim candidate over a Muslim, regardless of political dissatisfaction.

In a viral video, the cleric argued that some northerners seeking change are turning toward what he described as a more dangerous alternative than the current leadership. Referring to Obi, he alleged past actions and positions that, in his view, were unfavourable to northern interests, insisting that such a candidate should not be considered for leadership.

He framed the 2027 election as a religious choice, stating that he would not support a non-Muslim candidate under any circumstances. While acknowledging concerns about governance and the current state of the North, Sheikh Kano maintained that religious identity should remain the deciding factor.

He also invoked the idea of choosing the “lesser evil,” suggesting that even if a Muslim leader has shortcomings, they should still be preferred over a non-Muslim candidate perceived as more harmful.

The remarks come shortly after Obi and Kwankwaso joined the NDC, a development that had been described by Seriake Dickson as a significant political convergence ahead of the 2027 elections.
